Features Of LED TV Screens
LED TV's are the latest in cutting edge technology to hit the television market, providing a real step-up in the evolution of televisions and a fantastic range of features that will really strike a chord with consumers.
LED backlights have been quickly adopted by the electronics market, featuring in displays such as billboards, monitors, industrial equipment and portable devices. Their low power consumption and thin designs are particularly suited for battery powered devices, providing significantly longer usage times on one charge.
The key difference between an LCD screen and an LED one is the backlight structure. While an LCD television uses a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) as a light source, an LED display uses light emitting diodes (LED's), which are more power efficient and more capable at delivering a realistic graphic display.
But just because they're more power efficient doesn't mean they're dull - quite the opposite. LED's tend to be brighter and many come equipped with non-reflective screens, meaning they're better suited in brightly lit rooms that are subject to direct sunlight.
Another great feature of LED screens is their physical size - they're a lot thinner and significantly lighter - that's great news if you're planning on mounting yours on the wall and it'll be a lot easier to hold while fixing and won't protrude into the room in an unsightly fashion, like LCD's can.
The reason LED's are so thin is the way that the light emitting diodes are arranged around the screen, either behind it, known as backlit or around the edges, known as edge-lit. Edge-lit screens tend to be thinner than backlit screens and as they contain fewer diodes they're often less expensive. However, backlit screens are more capable at displaying blacks by using a 'local dimming' feature, where the bulbs are turned off in areas of no colour, stopping any unwanted light from filtering through.
LED screens also tend to have a better range of colors as they use red, green and blue lights to produce more realistic color combinations and greater colour depth, as well as a better contrast ratio.
LED light bulbs are particularly robust and have a very long lifespan, quoted at over 50,000 hours without degradation - that's 5 years of constant watching! They also have a smaller impact on the environment in their production as they don't contain mercury, making them easier to recycle and dispose of.
However, LED panels can suffer in the viewing angle area, and often lose colour and black levels when viewing at acute angles over 30 degrees. However, this issue is being addressed by the manufacturers and many are using in-plane switching panels, so keep an eye out for those when choosing your display.
As with any consumer product, there are pros and cons that will need to be weighed up by you, the consumer. However, LED does have some distinct advantages over the competition and for those they should be seriously considered. Of course these advantages tend to come at a price, but as more consumers jump on the bandwagon prices will fall, and it will only be a matter of time before they drop into your price range.
